Dr. Shiv Kumar Sarin is an eminent Indian gastroenterologist, hepatologist, translational scientist, and teacher. He is known for establishing the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences and for his pioneering work in liver diseases, including Portal Biliopathy and Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure. His contributions to the field have earned him prestigious awards such as the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize and the Padma Bhushan. Additionally, Dr. Sarin has served as the chairman of the Board of Governors of the Medical Council of India and held leadership roles in various national and international liver study associations.

Dr. Shiv Kumar's academic journey began at S.M.S. Medical College, Jaipur, where he graduated in 1974. He later specialized in gastroenterology at AIIMS, New Delhi, in 1981. Throughout his career, he has made significant strides in liver disease research, developing treatment protocols that have been widely adopted. His work on "endotoxemia induced portal hypertension" and the classification of gastric varices is particularly noteworthy.
